  • Dr Nanki is Professor of Division of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Toho University, Japan. He has focused on molecules that induce cell migration, particularly chemokines, and has continued to study chemokines that contribute to the recruitment of inflammatory cells to the site of inflammation in rheumatic diseases.

In several studies, he found that fractalkine, a chemokine, is involved in the infiltration of monocytes/macrophages and T cells into synovial tissue in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and reported that anti-fractalkine antibody were effective in suppressing arthritis in a mouse model of RA. This led to clinical trials of anti-fractalkine antibody in RA patients, and the efficacy of the antibody was found to be significant. For these research results, he received the Scientific Award from the Japan College of Rheumatology in 2021, the Novartis Rheumatology Medicine Award from the Japan Rheumatism Foundation in 2018, and the Promotion Award Young Investigators Award from the Japan College of Rheumatology in 2005. Currently, he is analyzing pharyngeal and gut microbiota and elucidating the role of senescent cells in interstitial lung disease to elucidate the pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases and develop novel therapies.

In clinical research, he has also analyzed the risk of serious infections and the association of biologic agents with malignancy in RA. He has also analyzed the impact of biologics on cardiovascular events that are common in RA. He is currently studying therapeutic agents for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and analyzing the characteristics of RA complicated by interstitial lung disease.
